ABOVE THE LAW
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Rom. 8:1Laws, relevant to our discussion this morning is defined {1} as sets of system or rules that a particular people is governed by, and {2} as a statement of fact, deduced from observation, to the effect that a particular natural or scientific phenomenon always occurs if certain conditions are present. Thus, if a man is bitten by a poisonous snake, naturally or scientifically the victim will die. If one jumps into the fire, lawfully he will be burnt. If one dies and is buried, naturally and scientifically he cannot come back to life. Scientifically, if a woman passes the age of 45 to 50, she cannot conceive again, as she is said to have hit menopause. A man that steps on a deep water is by law going to sink and drown. Certain things are actually lawful. But however, be it the laws of men, or the laws of science and nature, we are ABOVE THE LAW. You are ABOVE THE LAW!.
1. FAITH IN CHRIST ABOLISHES ALL LAWS
a. Before Christ Came
God at Mount Sinai, knowing the kind of people the Israelites were, and the economy that prevailed in their time gave Moses the Laws, which dealt with the right code of conduct, both with their fellows and with God, and the proper pattern of worship, specifying the resultant penalty for disobedience.{Ex. 20 - 31, 34 - 35; cf. Lev.1 - 17}. This masterpiece legal document checked the social and religious life of the people, and continued until Christ was born and ministered on earth.
b. After Christ’s Ministry
Apostle Paul in the book of Romans, seeking to disabuse the mind of the Christian Jews, who still held very sacred the laws of Moses, as prerequisite and proof for genuine conversion of the Gentiles to faith in Christ, put the Laws of Moses and the Faith in Christ on a scale to rank. Though to the law he gave a pass mark, however he said, “...What things soever the law saith, it saith to them under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all
the World become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believed...” {Rom. 3:19-22}. Thus Paul concluded according to our main text, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus , who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Indeed, condemnation is the key instrument of every law. But for men who are in Christ, their Faith is a more superior instrument Above the Law. Men who walk not according to flesh, but according to the Spirit are not bound by any promulgation
